Welcome to St.Lukes's pilot study into the cardiac health of Tasmanians.

We are working with Dr Warrick Bishop and his team at the Healthy Heart Network to gain an understanding of the heart health of our members and Tasmania as a whole.

We invite you to be a participant in this program to learn more about your heart health, and the best news, St.Lukes will cover the cost of the program, including a Cardiac Calcium Score CT scan, if you chose to undertake this part of the process.

To be eligible, you need to be a male over 55 or a female over 65, have no known history of heart problems and be willing to participate in this program.  The program consists of a questionnaire, a heart scan (if you decide to undertake) and a follow up survey every three months for 12 months.  Your results will be provided to your General Practitioner.

If you believe this pilot study is for you, please start by watching the short video below from Dr Bishop and click on “Take Free Heart Risk Check”.

How Healthy is Your Heart? Really?

I’m Dr Warrick Bishop, and I want you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a renowned cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network in Partnership with St Lukes Health.

One of the first common symptoms of a Heart Attack is Death.

You probably know of someone who appeared perfectly healthy who suddenly out of the blue died of a heart attack.

You might think you are immune to heart attack and think that it only happens to other people.

Wrong!  It accounts for around 1 in 4 deaths.

The key to avoiding heart disease and heart attacks is preventing the event in the first place.

In less than 5 minutes discover your personal risk of a heart attack right now by clicking below.

59% of Australians have been Touched by heart disease.

Yet only 3% of Australians have had a Full Heart-Health Assessment in the past 12 months.

What's Your Real Risk of Heart Attack?

Heart disease is the number one killer in the Western World and can be prevented in many cases. Being fit and healthy is no guarantee that the arteries in your heart are in good shape.  Dr Warrick Bishop believes you can prevent a heart attack.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all this is…

Every one of those cases could have been prevented.

The problem is most people think that a heart attack won’t happen to them. It is a problem that happens to other people. The elderly, people who are overweight, or people who don’t exercise and look after themselves.

The truth is a heart attack can happen to any adult. It can even happen to people who “feel fine.” The key to avoiding heart disease and heart attacks is preventing the ‘too late’ signs. Chest pain, breathlessness, and palpitations.

Curbing these before they happen is the holy grail of preventative cardiology.

This means that, if we were to take a group of 100 people who were high-risk and follow them for 10 years, 20 or more of those people would have a coronary event or symptom.

Within cardiology terminology, we define the risk of a coronary artery event as “low”, “intermediate” or “high”. A low risk is considered a less than 10 percent chance of a coronary event within 10 years. A high risk is considered a greater than 20 percent chance of an event within 10 years. An intermediate risk is between 10 and 20 percent risk of an event within 10 years.

But you still don't know precisely which group you're in!

When it comes to the heart, being aware of your blood pressure and keeping it down, being aware of your cholesterol and dealing with it appropriately, undertaking regular exercise, not smoking and addressing other cardiovascular risks are all important for a safe journey through life.

However, on their own, they offer no guarantee of avoiding a heart attack, although they are likely to reduce the risk

About Doctor Warrick Bishop

Practicing Cardiologist, #1 Best Selling Author, and Keynote Speaker

Doctor Warrick Bishop is a practicing cardiologist, best selling author, and keynote speaker and who has a passion to help prevent heart disease on a global scale.

Warrick graduated from the University of Tasmania, School of Medicine, in 1988. He completed his advanced training in cardiology in Hobart, Tasmania, becoming a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

A number of years ago something incredible, an amazing coincidence, happened that started Doctor Warrick Bishop on the mission to prevent heart attacks rather than try to cure them. He was driving to work one day when he stopped at a commotion by the side of the road. A fun runner had collapsed during a fun run with a heart attack. He helped in his resuscitation only to find out that had seen the very same man two years earlier and reassured him that he was fine.

From a practical perspective, the two extremes of low risk and high or very high risk are the easiest to deal with. Low risk requires little more than reassurance, a plan for ongoing lifestyle care and consideration of the role of future reassessment. Similarly, high- or very high-risk features dictate that therapy should be undertaken. The grey area lies in intermediate risk. This is where an understanding is needed, not only of the limitation of the data that is available to guide us.
